Last weekends competion in Duncanville ended this year's marching season. They came in 11th out of 23 other bands. This not being a state year, means that the show is usually more theatrical. Which LCHS band is not! According to Drew and Hunter, they are a marching band with precision.

Sunday, Joe and I headed home to get ready for our church's "trunk or treat". We were supposed to set up a beach theme for Drew to sit and pass out candy. Half way home we found out the band was running behind. Sooooo, I passed out the candy!

Dressed as Santa! One guy said I should have been Wal-Mart!

Monday night Hunter dressed in his go-to "Justin Beiber" outfit and went out with a sweet girl in a morf suit. Drew grabbed his banana and hotdog costumes and trick or treated with friends.

Having no kids at home, guess what Joe and I did? Closed every drape, turned off the lights and pretended we weren't home. BEST Halloween ever!

Parents Weekend

It's not just for college kids anymore :) Our Mom's blessed us with a visit last week and we did a TON of fun stuff. After picking them up at the airport our first stop was lunch at Yia Yia Mary's , so good!

Our football game was Thursday night.

Friday we headed for a drive in the country to Round Top. We ate lunch here, my Mom and I shared a shrimp BLT and each had a mug of Chicken Corn Chowder. We thought it went better with Joe's Jalapeno cheese soup, so we mixed the two together. We were right!

Everyones knows when you're out to lunch you have to stop by a cute shop, so we did! The Apotheacary doesn't disappoint!

Then if all that wasn't enough, Joe indulged my wander lust and went in search of this and came up with this too!

Saturday Drew and Hunter marched in their UIL Region 27 Marching Contest. The band did great getting all ones for the 22nd consecutive year.

Saturday night we celebrated Hunter's birthday at one of our all time favortie restaurants, Shogun

Sunday we said Goodbye to Joe's Mom and headed to Austin. First stop was UT to check out a sweet friend's dorm.

My Mom and I have read about and seen this airstream/foodtruck for years and have wanted to visit! Only problem, there was a 45 minute wait once you placed your order:(

We had lunch at The Oasis, which has beautiful views and even better company! Coming and going we always stop here!

Monday the guys went back to work and school:( My Mom and I headed to Pappadeaux's for lunch and of course more shopping :)

For dinner we tried a new recipe. It was a hit....for those who ate it!

And finally today was my Mom's last day, we squeezed in one more restaurant. This time we went with an urban theme and headed downtown to The Bombay Pizza Company which was AWESOME! And because we have that go-to-a-cute-store-after-you-eat rule. We crossed the street and went to CVS and bought some killer lotion that makes your hands sooooo smooth!

It was a great visit and we can't wait to do it again!

PS I think our dogs will miss Grandmas the most!

It's Not Easy Being Green

Once upon a time.....Drew took a chance and shared his green friend with the world by taking him to MYF.

The trio on the far left of the couch are leading the group in Praise and Worship. It moved Drew's friend so much he sat up. I think the guy on the far end would like to trade places with him. Laying on the floor, that is, covered up in a green morph suit.

The evening ended with an outside prayer at dusk. And everyone one went home, had quaintly time with their parents, got in bed at a decent time, and lived happily ever after. The End.

Saturday was one of those all band all day days. The schedule went like this:

7:00am - Call Time which means get there 30 minutes early always
8:15am -Load - Shower - Eat
9:15am - Depart for Rhodes Stadium
11:15am - Warm Up
12:00 - Perform
1:30pm - Return Langham
2:30pm - Arrive Langham - Down time until we leave for game
4:00pm - Leave for Pridgeon
5:00pm - Arrive Pridgeon
6:00pm - Cy Falls Game
10:30pm - Approximate Pick Up time

The game got rained on and the band loaded up early leaving a few instruments to entertain the crowd and support the team. After the game Drew headed to IHOP with a group and Hunter came home and went to bed!

Here's the results for their performance:

Congratulations to the Langham Creek Lobo Marching Band. This past Saturday our band competed in the Katy ISD Invitational Marching Festival and earned a 1st Division trophy for their performance. In competition with 17 other Class 5-A bands from Cy-Fair, Fort Bend, Houston ISD, Katy, Tomball, and Spring Branch school districts our Color Guard was named the "Outstanding Color Guard" of the contest and our Drum Majors Michael Greenberg and Katy Bertlshofer were named "Outstanding Drum Majors of the contest. The band also took 1st place honors in the Ensemble and Individual Marching Captions and our "Lobo Marching Band" earned 1st place overall and were named the Class 5 -- A Champion of the Contest. Congratulations Lobo Band!

I was so grateful they had nothing to do but rest on Sunday until I say Hunter's facebook status, IM SO BORED IM GUNNA DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just when I thought it was all too much for them, they once again proved my wrong. It's too much for me! They love being busy and aren't going to know what to do with themselves after marching season!

Homecoming?

One word, it's all you need to ask a girl to homecoming. Homecoming?

Here's the 411. It can be very involved and require several steps. But can be Lot's of fun and stress free if you're a guy and have a Mom who'll take care of everything...... Love ya, Drew and Hunter :)

First, if you're a guy, you have to decide if you want to go. I don't know if for girls that's ever a question. Then who to ask, in our case it was easy.

Now for the tricky/fun/what is everyone else doing, how to ask her part.

Hunter's girlfriend is in the Lobo drum line and likes penguins. He put yellow sticky notes on his drum set saying Homecoming? and finished with giving her a pillow pet penguin.

Drew has a love of road reflectors. He wrote Homecoming? on one and gave it his girlfriend when she was over watching a movie.

Other friends we know decorated yards and bedrooms.

Next step, the mum! Which I have come to love and really want to make next year. The Thursday before the game/dance guys and girls exchange mums/garters and wear them the next day to school. I'm kicking myself, everyone was here that night and I didn't get ONE picture....I forgot!

But we were ready Saturday night! Hunter left first. They opted to do something just the two of them and had dinner at a sushi place. Which means Hunter really likes her, because he doesn't like sushi!

Is was fun seeing them dressed up:) Can you see their "band tans"?

Drew and his girlfriend went with a group and had Italian. When he heard where they were going, he said he'd probably get food all over himself. His girlfriend told him she'd bring a tide to-go pin, take him to a bathroom men's or woman's, it didn't matter, and clean him up, funny stuff!

One the THE funnest things our youth group did this summer was a Thursday night, 7:00pm-2:30 am almost all night lock-in. This was after a day of band camp, the day before a band all night lock-in I did think Drew and Hunter would make it. I was wrong. First they met at church for games and snacks. At 10:30pm everyone loaded up to go play........

He Hangs Out At The Car Wash

Drew had the best time at the Band's Annual Car Wash fundraiser. The trombones worked the first shift and decided to come back at the end of the day to help with advertising.

They brought their instruments and played on a street corner. Sweet G even helped!

Oh yeah and costumes too. Like a banana, hot dog and king outfit.

This sweet 3 year old boy got his mom to stop the car, get out , give a dollar, not knowing that it was for a car wash (oh no, you get a car wash with this kind of entertainment!), with 3 other little kids in the car, to watch them play.

So, OF COURSE, they had to let him give it a try! Drew's my favorite today!

Hunter gave me the best gift today. He's going to a quinceanera and needed his clothes ironed.

Guess what he said? "I'll do it", sweet music to my ears. I thought I heard wrong, so I asked again. He had the same reply, "I'll do it". He's my favorite today :)

Hunter turned this in as homework today. Drew wrote something similar ealier this year about his love of band.

I AM

I marched in the scorching heat of the day hoisting my sousaphone with pride.

I belted out the numbers of the counts given.

I held my sousaphone as if it was mounted upon a statue of gold.

I raced toward my water bottle in search of hydration and dashed back as soon as I could to perfect my marching style.

I powered through the torturous pain in order to build up the finest muscle in order to hold my sousaphone up.

I focused with laser like precision toward the band directors.

I practiced day in and day out twenty four seven so I would not let my fellow band members down.

I visualized some of the finest bands in the nation from the Cavaliers to our own Langham Creek Band.

I persevered through the toughest of practices and remembered the happiest of laughs, I am a Langham Creek Band member.

Drew and Hunter had another great week at Camp Travis!

This years theme was;

Nicknamed Breezy, his counselor had this to say about him; one of the activities was to walk across a tightrope, many gave up. Drew didn't. He had;

Seasons of Change

Today is one of those "step change" days. Drew turns 16. Hopefully by this time next week he will have his drivers license, another step to growing up, towards Independence.

It makes me wonder, while the window was wide open, when he thought his parents hung the moon, did we teach him everything we wanted him to know, love on him enough, convince him he can be and do ANYTHING he sets his mind to? So many questions, few he will answer.

Does he know we're crazy about him and so proud of the man he is becoming.

Does he know:

We'll love him forever,
We'll like him for always,
As long as We're living
Our baby he'll be.

He's ready, so ready. It's us who's not. Drew, be easy on us, you're growing up before our eyes and as awesome as it is to have a front seat, it's also bittersweet!

Day 2 We headed for Kennedy Space Center, the reason for the trip, to see the last shuttle launch. The launch was scrubbed so we enjoyed the exhibits.

Drew and Hunter scored 4 free tickets to IMAX showing of "Transformers-Dark Side of the Moon" a day ahead of its opening....

Day 3 DAYTONA!!!!

Standing at an 18 degree incline, you need to go 95 mph to stick to the track. Daytona wins the award for the best BBQ of the trip at Woody's.

Day 4, St. Augustine, The oldest continually occupied city in the US

Day 5 Savannah, Georgia We took a breath and spend a few days in one spot. This our second time, the first was ALL about Paula Deen.

This time we explored the 24 beautiful and the houses that surrounded them. This house was the first in Savannah to have electricity and is said to be haunted.

John and Charles Wesley, founders of the Methodist church opened their first first in US church in Savannah.

Don't think we forgot about Paula Deen, we ate at The Lady & Sons' and her brother's resturant "Uncle Bubba's" and did a little stalking, that's the roof of her house in the middle of the picture.

On the way out of town we stopped at Harbor Town, Hunter was collecting golf balls for a sweet friend.

Day 8 Charleston, South Carolina

We went to Fort Sumter, looked at more historic Mansions, celebrated the 4th of July and ate good food. It was a fun trip with lots a great memories made. Hey Hunter, we're thinking about Yosemite next year- how do you feel about that?

On the momentous occasion of the Royal Wedding, I can never say, "Honey, Can we go to London?" Cause I've been there! Almost 16 years to the day. Joe and I along with his parents went to London the week of American Mothers Day, May 14. Exactly two months to the day I became a Mother:)

We rented a "flat" in Chelsea and hit all the "tourist" hot spots. We went to plays, castles, churches and ate at McDonald's! Joe's favorite story is that I took a $30+ taxi to the closest Dunkin Donuts, which happened to be in Piccadilly Circle, and made the cab driver wait while I got my donuts. Maybe that's why Drew loves donuts so much.

For the last 2 weeks Hunter has run the 1600 and the 2400 which just so happen to be the first and LAST event. He packs a snack to eat and hangs out in the stands in between while we go home and rest our eyes from all the hard work of watching him run 1.5 miles! Then we come back at the end and watch him run the mile.

While he pushing through the pain I'm in the stands with this sweet thing, playing with ring bops.

Spring "No" Break .....Yet

I've always had the opinion that house work kills. We're doing a little housekeeping today before we get in the full swing of Spring Break.

Ours is not a happy home :(

Oh, Joe's happy. It's a BEAUTIFUL day. He has his play clothes on and is playing in the dirt. Life is good!

It's the spirit of our children we are killing by not providing them with the rest they so desperately need.

He Wrote A Sonet

Drew turned this in as an English project today, worried he's written too many papers about band.

I open my black case, and reach inside,
My hands close around a shiny object.
Quickly I attach the bell to the slide.
I twist the mouthpiece so it won’t eject.

My trombone is put together at last.
I hold the cold brass up against my face,
I take a deep breath and let a note blast.
Playing my trombone is my happy place.

My trombone and I have been through a lot,
In marching band we didn’t make the show,
Nevertheless we worked hard for a spot.
Us two have been friends since long ago.

Gently I unscrew its slide from its bell.
And put my trombone back in its black shell.

He has come such a long way since the end of 5Th when he found out he has perfect lips to play the trombone. Which was not he 1st, 2nd or 3rd choice. He had taken drum lessons in hopes of playing percussion.

His whole 6Th grade year his trombone made it no farther than the back door, where he would drop if off in the afternoon and pick it up in the morning. Everything started "clicking" when try-outs for 7Th grade band started. To this day he has regret about not practicing enough and asks us why we didn't push him more. Like he would have listened!

Fast forward to 9Th grade and band is ALL he talks about. He can take any subject and turn it into a topic about band.

Summer band can't get here fast enough!

Track Meet #1

Hunter's first track meet was yesterday. He ran in the mile and 1.5 mile. Which happened to be to first and last event! The temp swung high and very low. He came in 4Th in the 1.5 mile and somewhere in the middle for the mile. Good Job Hunter!

Redneck Pole Vaulting

It's track season and Hunter being the dedicated athlete that he is practices at home. In the backyard, with PVC pipes, folding chairs, really nice pillows from his BED and the pole we use to attach skimmer baskets to for the pool. It's like a scene from the rugrats where, in their mind, they're at the Olympics but reality it's just their back yard.

Channel Amy Grant. Last week during the snowstorm ~~debacle~~ of 2011, one of our pipes burst GASP! Joe even it.

Proof there was precipitation- icicles :)

We got a call from a neighbor saying his driveway was flooding thanks to our hose/facet. Joe raced home. I, on the other hand, continued lunch with friends, ha! Full discloser, the neighbor turned the water off to our house. If you've ever lived anywhere the water is turn off regularly, you know what that means.....1 flush per toilet...that's it! TMI, I know.

Back in the day our kids were ALL over helping Joe, fix ANYTHING!

Hunter had tubes put in his ears that morning and Joe and I were on a committee at church that planned valentine dance that evening.

I had just turned 30, wanna know what I got? My FIRST cell phone, it was HUGE! And a VCR! I won't even watch a movie today unless I can get it "on-demand"! The world has changed so much in 13 short years!

We got to Chicago just ahead of the snow.

One night we bundled up and headed to Lincoln Park Zoo- they decorate for Christmas and had great lights. It inspired me until I thought about having to take it all down!

Sweet Home Chicago Part I

We've spent a few Christmas' in Chicago, Joe's hometown. Like the year Drew was born, we were living in Moscow, Russia and had plans to got to Elot, Israel for the holiday when we realized because of a surgery, Joe's dad had NEVER held our precious bundle of joy. So, we hopped a plane and surprised them Christmas Eve.

And 3 years earlier-

It was my first "white" Christmas. Me and my sweet SIL MB blowing in the wind to see our breath.

Fast forward to 2010 the forecast was promising a big snow, with lots of family activities and a car begging for a road trip.

Hunter had his Christmas concert last week and was recognized 3 times for his accomplishments in the band program. Each patch or ribbon represents a separate award he's received over the last two years, something he's SUPER proud of! His goal next year is to make region band and "letter" as a freshman!

One of Joe's many talents is working around the house. He loves to "putter" and I love to give him projects.

So when the epic water leak of '10 ruined our entire wood floor, because of this much damage, my mind went in to home improvement overload.

Because I knew this was in our future

and our furniture would make it's home in the "cozy kitchen"

and if the floors where being replaced, it would be a perfect time to install bead board in the dining room. Because I want it to look like the picture below and pretend I live here.

With MUCH reservation-he said YES! I think his exact words were: I really have serious doubt about this, but I'll do it because it's a good excuse to get the nail gun I've always wanted.

Hunter had the advantage of already knowing alot of people, he sat with a great guy who is going to work with him this spring on his audition music for next year.

UIL Area E Marching Contest

Yesterday Drew participated in a competition that decided if his band would go to state. His day started at 9:00am with a warm-up/rehearsal and a preliminary performance at 2:30pm competing against 22 other bands. Ten bands would then advance to the finals of which four of those bands would be selected to advance to state. They made the first round and performed again at 9:00pm.

And the results are......Drew's band is now headed to state! The video starts with the announcement that they made the finals, then the performance that won them a spot at the state competition and finishes with them hearing that they made it!

Three days before the grand opening of our new church, I got a wild hair. We needed banners and I didn't think any of the existing ones matched the new organic/natural/rustic theme.

So I made one. I look like a kindergartner learning to cut! At least that's what Joe thought, he had BIG reservations. Rightfully so- I brought home yards of burlap, muslin and made a pattern out of our kids craft paper.

But he stuck with me and helped ALOT! Like climbing a tall ladder to hang them.

Yes them- I made two!

Home Fun

School has taken to calling homework "home fun". There's only one class Hunter has no problem doing his homework.....BAND! I found this "home fun" assignment on the printer, appropriately titled "tuba King".

It was a semi-cold dry Saturday morning, and there wasn’t a cloud in the sky. I waited months for this day and I just couldn’t mess it all up here. I walked into the school where the event was being held, where it smelled like valve oil mixed with the smell of new reeds. It was the region band audition; region band is where the top performing bands in the entire district all audition to form a super band!

The pressure was on, I’ve spent half of my year proving to my teachers I was good but now it was the final countdown. I was shaking like a Chihuahua in Antarctica. It was about time to go to the room where each tuba player would show off they’re skills in front of three judges. My heart was racing and I could barley hold my tuba. Then we finally got into the room; there were tubas all around. We each got a letter of the alphabet to show who goes first starting with “a”. Luckily I wasn’t first. Then the director started to explain the rules of region band I heard the words “You may now practice” come out of his mouth, immediately everyone started playing and it sounded like a toilet flushing. After that I was pumped! I anxiously waited my turn to “wow” the judges then at last it was my turn. I held my tuba high and with pride. I slowly put my face to my slightly warm mouthpiece as the taste of victory flew in my mouth. I played my heart out; pleased with the way I played I walked back to my seat where I sat patiently waiting to leave.

At last we came out of the room. It seemed like years before they announced who made what chair, but finally they started to go through a few names, yet non of them were mine. Depressed I started putting my tuba back in the case then something stopped me the man announcing the names finally said mine! I screamed with joy and all the adrenaline in the world started to flow through my veins.

Last night was his fall concert....for you listening pleasure.

I had a comment asking about the chalkboard in our living room, so I thought I'd post where I got the idea. A couple of years ago Hunter was playing football and I found this and thought is was so great for keeping track of football scores.

I bought a frame the size I wanted at Hobby Lobby, where everything is always on sale, a piece of wood and some chalkboard paint. I feel a bit Huck Finn, Joe put everything together, and A wrote out all the score. She has killer calligraphy skills! The whole project was under $50

More than a year ago I starting lobbying for new living room furniture, specifically a new couch.

Ours was 18 years old, had been recovered once and the back and one arm was broken from kids playing karate kid. Exhibit A- Young Karate kid types.

Years before, I had read an article in Better Homes & Garden about a decorator who's ideas I really liked. I looked in the back to read more about her and found out...she lives right down the road!

I called and she came.....to MY house! She helped pick out fabric for every window down stairs and advised on a kitchen valance, accessory placement and so much more. I loved her!

Fast forward to present day- rather than buying new, I wanted to recover 3 chairs and needed help and with fabric and a rug. Having a busy schedule and a new baby she suggested an email consultation. Which worked perfect for me. I sent her swatches, she gave her advice. She is also great about sending out emails with ideas and decorating websites. One of which was fabric.com I found fabric I liked at very reasonable prices. Moral of the story is you don't have to live in my area to work with her!

Through referral, I found this family owned company to recover the chairs. They made matching pillows and added fabric to two sets of drapes. I L.O.V.E. them. So much so that they are making custom pieces for our churches new narthex. They also work with out of town customers and ship all over.

For all Thursday and Saturday games, I've volunteered to get ice for the band

Job description: Someone, preferably with a truck, take 8 big and 2 small coolers to a junior high, fill them with ice and return them to the band hall. How could I say no, I'd be running for cover every time someone saw us in the truck!

I can't think of ice without thinking for the Russian translation- pronounced "lee-yod". Another lady and I filled 10 coolers, one scoop of "lee-yod" at a time!

One at a Time Please

A and I talk alot about having too many things in a row and how we only have capacity to do one thing at a time. Meaning one activity- rest, another-rest, another rest. Rest as in, a day in between. This weekend I had 3 things in one day! Daunting.

Saturday morning started EARLY with 438 chairs being delivered to our new church.

Afterward, Joe, Drew and I went our separate ways. Joe to work, Drew to band practice, me to "Shop 'til your drop". They drew the short end of the stick. The craft show was great. I found several Christmas presents and the "it" reproducible gift I'm excited to make.

The day ended with a Drew having his gf over for a movie and Joe and I having dinner date and some of this yummy white sangria drink.

Sunday was another EARLY morning. We passed out "cry towels" at Reliant as a band fundraiser. I lucked out and got an inside job- the others not so lucky. The heat index was 105- someone in our group passed out!

Joe saw Payton Manning's back before he ran through the tunnel.

Drew is now in constant marching mode- always walking backward.

Afterward, we ate lunch and of course rested! It was after all, the Sabbath- Drew kept reminding us. I know, I know you need an abacus to keep up with all the "activities"-said in the Voice of Will Ferrell from Step-brothers.

Next up, Drew and Hunter go to MFY. When it's over,Drew calls and said he's not coming home. Nice-he has an errand to run and something important to pick up.

Hunter and I get in the car to be loving and do it for him. Hunter turns to me and says, "I feel like I haven't done anything this weekend." He's right, his calender was wide open! Here's a sneak peek of what we got-

In the spirit of the first week of school, I've made dinner every night, I repeat EVERY NIGHT . Plus lunches, plus breakfast. Our kitchen has been hoppin' like something out of Mel's diner. Last night being no different I made this beautiful creation.

But did anyone show up to eat it.......no! After a killer band practice Drew went to a friends house and Hunter went to Bible study. So Joe and I got to have a peaceful dinner alone-and let's be honest, all the food prep is really for him. Drew and Hunter would much rather have a meal that comes in a bag from a take out window.

There is something seriously wrong when Hunter leaves the house before the majority is awake. Like leave the house to the tune of 5:50am! We got a note home saying "cross country is in full swing" how can that be on DAY 2?! And I was feeling sorry for Drew because he starts school at 7:30 and stays after for band practice until 5:30 in 100plus degree heat.

He's in the middle row-light blue and white hat.

But he didn't have to do this.....end his day at a cotillion meeting and walk arm in arm with a girl!

Don't feel too bad, he got cookies as payment for pain and suffering following his 17 hour activity packed day.

I've heard of husbands and wives taking separate vacations, but never parents and kids. But when my SIL called several months ago and invited Drew and Hunter for a visit- we couldn't resist. It's win, win. 12 days of fun for them and equal days of peace for us!

When is was time for them to come home, not only were they ready- so were their friends. We took 6 with us to the airport. I don't know if it was because it was so late or they were delirious - but we asked, and they let us walk to the gate- like in the old days. It's was like 12:30am, no one was around, so we took the opportunity to have some fun!

Friends at First Bite..

Today is Hunter's very first friends' birthday. The first time he met her, he bit her! She was only a couple of days old and just home from the hospital. She must have forgiven him, because they became fast friends. They took naps, learned to walk and talk, and play dress up together. Not much has changed in 13 years!

Last night was the Symphonic Pops Concert- It was Drew's final concert in Junior High. LCHS- here he comes-band camp has already started! Afterwards we took pictures and went out to celebrate :)

Drew and Hunter had to do a project for Spanish-Take pictures of a day in your life and label them in Spanish. They took pictures of their morning routine. Now I know why their lips are so rosey and my lipstick is missing!
